Today! Please watch the latest creation from my friend Nathan James Leatherman, a lyric video for “Paris” from last year’s Purple Chair Music release Reckoning. You can see more of what Nathan is up to (he also did videos for “Go Away” and “Reckoning,” as well as an amazing collaboration on Stephan Crump’s “Thwirl”) on his website, here.
Tomorrow! I’ll be joining hip-hop pioneer (and one of the nicest guys in the world) Darryl McDaniels, aka DMC of Run DMC, onstage at the Paramount Theater in Huntington NY, for the Long Island Music Hall of Fame Induction Award Ceremony and Gala. A few years back, DMC tapped into his childhood love for my dad’s “Cat’s in the Cradle” to tell the story of his recently-discovered adoption as an infant for his song “Just Like Me.” Sarah McLachlan sang on the track, and I’ll be filling in on verses and choruses now to honor Darryl, his music, and his tireless humanitarian work.
Next month! I won’t be singing, but I’m honored to serve on the host committee for the Hope North Gala here in NYC on Saturday November 1st. Hope North is a school for escaped former child soldiers, orphans and refugees started by former child soldier and performing artist Okello Sam. Okello has become a friend and inspiration, and he knows something we often forget in this wealthy country — that music and arts education is not a luxury, but necessity for young people needing a lifeline out of violence, poverty, or just plain adolescence. Come join us if you can! Learn more and support Hope North online here.
(Last month!) I was privileged to be able to contribute my songs “Feed Your Baby” and “Gospel” to the Food Justice rally immediately preceding the massive and amazing People’s Climate March on 9/21/14. It was a beautiful celebration of diverse humanity, joining together for our own survival and the planet’s. The conversation, and the myriad small changes we each can make each day toward sustainability, are starting..
Performance-wise, I have three solo benefit shows next month — in Connecticut for Operation Hope and New Jersey for WhyHunger. Kinda terrifying as I’m used to leaning hard on my virtuoso bandmates, but I’m working on getting my non-virtuoso guitar playing up to a listenable level. Come on out and don’t be shy with the critiques!
Stephan and Jamie will be back with me for shows in December and January in NJ and NYC, and then we return to Ontario for a late January working visit to Niagara Falls. I’ll probably try to wrangle another Toronto-area show that weekend so please let me know any suggestions or ideas.
Please keep in touch and don’t be shy about getting in touch via email@example.com. I’m happy to hear from you. Thanks for listening!
