upstate NY in August

I’m excited about two shows coming up in early August, just before the Jen Chapin Trio embarks on our annual journey north to spots in New England and Atlantic Canada. The first reunites Jamie Fox and I with our much-loved keyboardist comrade Chris Brown (these are the original Jamie Fox and Chris Brown, by the way, not the other guys you may have heard of) at a scenic retreat outside Rochester, NY, on Friday August 11th. (I’m also doing a couple workshops earlier that day. See Silver Lake Experience for details.) Then on Sunday, Jamie and I will convene with noted journalist and author Seth Rogovoy as part of his Salon Series at Club Helsinki in Hudson NY. Join us if you can!

Sunday, August 13 * DOORS: 5:00 PM / SHOW: 7:00 PM

Summer tours, first up: duo in OH & IN

Happy Summer Everybody!

My longtime musical partner (the original) Jamie Fox
and I will be celebrating the season by taking
our guitars and voices out for a little midwest tour. We’ll be playing
six dates across Ohio and Indiana with two shows in the latter state
being benefit concerts — in Jasper for their Arts Center (yeah for
local arts!) and in South Bend for my favorite organization in the
world, WhyHunger. The details and ticket links for those shows are below. Stay tuned for forthcoming details about August
shows in upstate NY, CT, and Atlantic Canada!

Record Store Day & People’s Climate March

Happy Spring Everyone!

My younger son Van, age 7, has been getting a lot of use from our turntable lately, repeatedly spinning Stevie Wonder’s masterpieceTalking Book and the Beatles’ Rubber Soul. Van also has a healthy obsession with 80’s Dolly Parton tunes like “9 to 5” and “Islands in the Stream.” This Saturday April 22nd on Record Store Day, I’ll be looking to expand Van’s listening a little by fleshing out our strangely thin Beatles LP selections and maybe picking up some early Dolly (Stevie we have covered) at the friendly and well-stocked Village Music World on historic Bleecker Street in NYC. Village Music World is a wonderful long-standing small business that has stocked my CDs and Reckoning LP for years now (and whose community-minded owner Jamal just happens to be an immigrant of Muslim heritage), and guitarist Jamie Fox and I are happy to celebrate this and all neighborhood independent music stores by performing a set of my tunes in the shop, starting around 8 pm.

Another way I’ll be celebrating spring and good things is by joining the People’s Climate March in Washington DC on Saturday April 29th. The 2014 People’s Climate March in NYC was an amazing experience (you can see clips of my singing and other festivities there in the video for my song”Gospel”) and I am happy to play a tiny part in this broad and expanding movement towards a sustainable planet. “It’s going to take a long time, but we’re not going away.” It seems we don’t have a lot of time before climate change becomes irreversible but in any case, the future – for health, for justice, for jobs — lies here. If you’d like to join us, check out People’s Climate Movement online for information about buses, local organizing, etc.

busy fall in Brooklyn, LI, PA, VA and CaliforNi-A!

Hello Hello everyone!

Such a beautiful early fall here in Brooklyn NY, where I’ll be starting a month-long October residency of 5 at 5 pm early Sundays at a very special neighborhood spot, Barbés. In this intimate and informal space, I’ll be mixing it up with different songs and different musicians each week, bringing in jazz standards, classic New Orleans tunes, and even a few of my dad’s. Speaking of my dad Harry, I have the opportunity to perform at several tributes to him this fall, first on October 15th in Riverhead NY, then on November 12th in Fairfield CT, then on December 9th in Bethlehem PA.
There will be additional October shows in eastern PA and even one in the mountains of Virginia, but the big trip is to southern California for three shows November 4th, 5th and 6th right before Election Day, if we all can keep our heads together that long. Full details for all these shows are here at jenchapin.com/shows.
I know you all can’t possibly guess who I’m voting for (he he) and I’ll keep you in suspense a bit longer. In the meantime, if you haven’t already YOU GOTTA REGISTER TO VOTE! Here’s how, state by state.

online show Wednesday, plus summer tour up north

Hey hey Everyone!

Stephan Crump, Jamie Fox and I (plus junior roadies Maceo and Van Crump) are about to embark on our annual summer tour to New England and Atlantic Canada, but in the meantime you can hear us from WHEREVER YOU ARE at 8 pm EST this coming Wednesday, when we play a live online show via Concert Window. It’s a fun format, where you pay-what-you-wish, (wear-what-you-wish, too!) and interact with the Trio online as you watch and listen. Sometimes Maceo and Van add their own 2¢ to the comments as well!

Aside from the fact that we will be broadcasting live from home into your computer rather than from a stage, this show is different in that the song selection will not be from my original repertoire but rather from the New Orleans songbook of the 50s & 60s. These songs and the artists behind them have been an inspiration to us, and we invite you to join us as we pay tribute and have much fun along the way. Jamie Fox will be our leader as he assembles the set list and shares microphone duties with me.
Check out the details and sign up here: www.concertwindow.com/12641-jen-chapin

Our tour starts Friday with a house concert in Plymouth MA, and continues for three concerts in Nova Scotia before we head back down to play two early evening outdoor festival sets in Kingston and Providence, Rhode Island. You can see the full schedule and how to make reservations here at https://jenchapin.com/shows.

In other news, I’m honored that a piece I wrote a few years back about racial justice was just republished on the WhyHunger Connect Blog. Check it out here, and sign up for WhyHunger’s newsletter for more hopeful news about the fight against hunger and poverty. Also on the site, fans of my dad Harry are sharing memories and joining the “Giving Circle” with sustaining monthly donations to support grassroots solutions that work.

New events are being added all the time, so get the details and the latest at the “shows” page here. And please sign up for email updates while you’re at it!

Happy MLK Day, and 2016 gigs preview

Hello good people,

Yes! It’s amazing that this nation choses to celebrate the radical love of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. — but this day always makes me think of the thousands of others whose unsung activism also made up the civil rights movement and other struggles for peace and political and economic justice that continue today.
One of these, Dr. Vincent Harding, is quoted in my song “Gospel” whose video by the great K8 Howley and Jak Ritger was released one year ago today. You can view that again, here. (If you like it, please pass it on!)
Another, Lynda Blackmon Lowery, told her story to my cousin Elspeth Leacock who helped her write the amazing kids/teens book “Turning 15 on the Road to Freedom: My Story of the 1965 Selma Voting Rights March”, which is a wonderful contribution to the conversation, for readers young and old.

In other news, see below for a preview of my shows confirmed so far for 2016, starting with a benefit for Haiti in Montclair NJ on January 30th. Later in the year we’ll be around New York, and making stops in Pennsylvania, Illinois, Nova Scotia, Virginia, and California!
Check out jenchapin.com/shows for the full scoop for now, though more shows are to be confirmed soon.

Thanks for listening!
