Happy MLK Day, and 2016 gigs preview

Hello good people,

Yes! It’s amazing that this nation choses to celebrate the radical love of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. — but this day always makes me think of the thousands of others whose unsung activism also made up the civil rights movement and other struggles for peace and political and economic justice that continue today.
One of these, Dr. Vincent Harding, is quoted in my song “Gospel” whose video by the great K8 Howley and Jak Ritger was released one year ago today. You can view that again, here. (If you like it, please pass it on!)
Another, Lynda Blackmon Lowery, told her story to my cousin Elspeth Leacock who helped her write the amazing kids/teens book “Turning 15 on the Road to Freedom: My Story of the 1965 Selma Voting Rights March”, which is a wonderful contribution to the conversation, for readers young and old.

In other news, see below for a preview of my shows confirmed so far for 2016, starting with a benefit for Haiti in Montclair NJ on January 30th. Later in the year we’ll be around New York, and making stops in Pennsylvania, Illinois, Nova Scotia, Virginia, and California!
Check out jenchapin.com/shows for the full scoop for now, though more shows are to be confirmed soon.

Thanks for listening!
Jen

Happy December Everyone

All the slick faces on the TV
they tell us be fearful
we are warned very soberly
don’t you listen, turn away, turn away
there’s a different melody to play..

I just saw a news headline noting “fear in the air” but I don’t feel that way, nor do I think it would be remotely useful if I did.
This past Monday I got to sing my song “Let it Show” to a large festive outdoor crowd in NYC, and though I wrote the words quoted above ten years ago, I feel the same today.
I sang supported by loving family among Christmas lights. In the crowd, a Muslim friend and neighbor hoisted our younger son Van on his shoulders to see the festivities as big brother Maceo played with his sons.
We are strengthened by love and faith, community and care, and a welcome to strangers..

I was happily surprised the other night when my boys asked to view the music video for my song “Gospel”, beautifully crafted earlier this year by K8 Howley and Jak Ritger. It celebrates social movements past, present and future.
Would you care to watch it again with us?

This coming Sunday December 13th Stephan, Jamie and I play in Nyack NY to benefit the Fellowship for Reconciliation, a 100 year old organization that has maintained a steady voice for peace through wars and struggles for human rights.

Sunday, December 13th * 5 pm
Fellowship of Reconciliation’s Annual Winter Solstice Event (2 – 6 pm)
— food, music, community —
F.O.R at Showdowcliff
521 North Broadway, Nyack NY 10980
Suggested Dontation $20 per person….$40 for families….$60 Earth Angel

Today, it would be my dad Harry’s 73rd birthday. Though he’s been gone for 34 years, I feel blessed to feel a living, vibrant connection with him through the work of WhyHunger, which he helped found (as “World Hunger Year” 40 years ago)
You can honor Harry Chapin and support an end to hunger by donating at Hungerthon.org, or joining “Harry’s Giving Circle”.

Over Thanksgiving weekend, we celebrated my mom Sandy’s birthday as well. She is a formidable lyricist (“Cat’s in the Cradle”, anyone?) and poet and recently published her long-overdue first book of poetry.
I welcome you to “like” her author page on Facebook, and order her book, “Entries”, to get an intimate (and sometimes sexy — yikes!) look at my parents’ partnership and other dreams, while supporting the Harry Chapin Foundation.

Peace and Love everybody!

Hey everybody! Jamie Fox, Stephan Crump, the two junior Crumps and I are heading north on tour this week. Please click on “shows” for details on our concerts indoors and outside in Rhode Island, Maine, and the breathtaking Maritime Provinces of Canada. Also, for the fall I’ve just scheduled a late afternoon set on October 11th at the Turning Point in Piermont NY, two late October shows farther upstate as well as a November residency at the very special, very tiny Barbes in Brooklyn — I will be putting together different ensembles and songs for every Sunday at 5 pm! My dad died 34 years ago today, but has remained very much with us through his timeless music, our vivid memories, and the transformative programs of WhyHunger, which Harry cofounded in 1975. I’ve been serving on WhyHunger‘s Board of Directors for more than 20 years now, and am enormously proud of the work we are doing -supporting grassroots solutions to hunger and poverty around the world and helping build a broader movement towards good food for all. Please join me in offering sustaining support of: $5 a month to “Keep the Change,” $10 a month since “You Can Always Count on the Cheap Seats,” $25, “I Wonder What Would Happen” and so on..

To celebrate WhyHunger’s 40th Anniversary, we’re trying to add 40 new members to Harry’s Giving Circle in the next two weeks. I’ll keep you posted as we make progress to our goal. Will you join us? http://whyhunger.org/harrysgivingcircle

Anybody up for hosting an early weeknight house concert? Or perhaps having us do a workshop at your kid’s summer camp? We’re open to the possibilities!

brand new “Gospel” video on WNYC.org for MLK Day

Hello everyone! I am happy to live in a country with a national holiday honoring the “steady, loving, confrontation” of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the struggle of generations to make ours a more perfect union.

And I’m delighted that this amazing, brand new video of my song “Gospel” by K8 Howley and Jak Ritger has been given the distinction of an exclusive premiere on WNYC.org, introduced by the great radio host John Schaefer:

Please click on, view and share widely! Thanks so much for watching, and listening,

Jen

Happy New Year Friends!

Here’s what I have going on music-wise for the next month or so:

This coming Sunday I’m spending an afternoon at the beach! Kinda sorta. I’ve been invited to join the Light of Day Winter Fest-ivities for “Songwriters by the Sea” in Asbury Park NJ and am looking forward to sharing a few songs (solo) with other able writers donating their time. The following weekend the trio goes north to Rochester NY and Niagara Falls ON, then we’ll play back closer to home at an intriguing new vegetarian restaurant/eco-retailing/entertainment space in Westchester County, Recologie.

In February, Stephan Crump and I will share music from our home to yours in our 2nd online show via ConcertWindow.com. Anyone around the world with a decent internet connection can pay-as-you-wish to watch and listen and interact with comments online. We had much fun last time, and the audience seemed to as well — even our 9-year old Maceo who typically declines to see us live was happy to watch from the next room on my laptop and type in his more-than-2¢ worth. (Then again, I’m reminded that the young ones will do anything if it involves a screen and keys to click.. ) Click here to sign up for a reminder and see how it all works. Please send me a note if you’re planning to tune in and would like to make a song request, or let me know anything else on your mind!

Thanks so much for listening,

Jen
