January 18, 2016 by Jen Chapin
Hello good people,
Yes! It’s amazing that this nation choses to celebrate the radical love of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. — but this day always makes me think of the thousands of others whose unsung activism also made up the civil rights movement and other struggles for peace and political and economic justice that continue today.
One of these, Dr. Vincent Harding, is quoted in my song “Gospel” whose video by the great K8 Howley and Jak Ritger was released one year ago today. You can view that again, here. (If you like it, please pass it on!)
Another, Lynda Blackmon Lowery, told her story to my cousin Elspeth Leacock who helped her write the amazing kids/teens book “Turning 15 on the Road to Freedom: My Story of the 1965 Selma Voting Rights March”, which is a wonderful contribution to the conversation, for readers young and old.
In other news, see below for a preview of my shows confirmed so far for 2016, starting with a benefit for Haiti in Montclair NJ on January 30th. Later in the year we’ll be around New York, and making stops in Pennsylvania, Illinois, Nova Scotia, Virginia, and California!
Check out jenchapin.com/shows for the full scoop for now, though more shows are to be confirmed soon.
Thanks for listening!
